As an importer, Massa Imports is proud to be working closely with world class tile manufacturers that are not only leaders in design, but also in sustainability, with a demonstrated commitment to environmentally sound practices.
Our leading manufacturers produce high-quality, trend defining products that have low environmental effects. Working to international best practices in environmental management systems, their sustainable manufacturing processes consider the following issues:
- Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
- Energy Efficiency
- Water Conservation and Re-Use
- Recycling and Waste Minimisation
- Pollution and Conservation Control
As a result, tiles are inherently green with a typical lifespan of up to 50 years; our manufacturers produce long lasting ceramic and porcelain stoneware that is increasingly eco-conscious. The use of tiles in your new home, renovation, alteration or addition, can contribute to achieving an Australian 6 Star Standard in energy efficiency.
Your project can benefit from using tiles, in a thoughtfully designed house, by saving on heating and cooling costs and increasing thermal comfort.
Using the principles of passive solar design, you can maximize your energy efficiency and take advantage of your building’s orientation to the sun, by using your tile flooring, laid over concrete slab, to store solar energy and heat that passes through your windows.
The tiles and concrete work together, as a thermal mass, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, as the temperature drops. Wall tiles can also contribute in the same manner; typically, dark coloured tiles will attract and store more heat.
With unlimited design potential, innovations in tiles extend beyond the aesthetic, down to their eco-friendly make up. We stock tiles produced to ISO 14001:2004 standards, as well as recycled content tiles (link to LEED tab) and green certified tiles (link to Ecolabel tab). Use fine ceramic and porcelain tiles to reach your project’s green potential. For the past ten years, the internationally recognized European Union Ecolabel flower has symbolized the mark of environmentally sound products.
Developed in Europe and used worldwide, the EU Ecolabel (EC regulation no. 66/2010) is a third party green rating system that measures products against stringent environmental ISO standards. This rating system, run by an independent European institute, certifies products that pass scrutiny of their entire life.
Environmental effects throughout the lifecycle of the tile are evaluated, starting from the extraction, selection and processing of materials, to the use of energy and water for production, to their shipping and packaging, to their contribution to air and environmental quality, to their maintenance and finally their disposal or re-use.
Our EU Ecolabel ceramic and porcelain tiles come supported with certification documents. Please speak to your sales representative to find out if the tile you are considering is Ecolabel certified and to receive the relevant Ecolabel documentation.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a holistic rating system that was developed by the US Green Building Council and is used worldwide to certify green buildings, neighbourhoods and communities.
This third party rating system is used for implementing and measuring high-performance green design, construction, operations and maintenance in the built environment. In this whole building approach, projects are measured against the following criteria: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and awareness and education.
While products themselves are not LEED certified, they can contribute to LEED projects. Ceramic and porcelain tiles can contribute to LEED credits in the following ways:
- Recycled Materials Content (MR Credits 4.1 and 4.2)
- Low-Emitting Materials (EQ Credit 4.3)
- Heat Island Effect (SS Credit 7.1)
Please contact us to find out if the tile you are selecting qualifies for LEED credits and to obtain the applicable required documentation. There may be additional ways for tile to contribute to LEED points; please consult with your LEED Accredited Professional.
